Bone cysts are benign are do not spread to other parts of the body.Simple bone cysts are cavities that form in the bone and are filled with fluid. They are considered latent or active depending on their location. Active bone cysts are located near the epiphyseal (growth) plate and will continue to grow until it fills the entire diaphysis (shaft). Latent cysts are located away from the epiphyseal plate and will heal with treatment or resolve on their own.Around the femur, bone cysts can develop from the synovial joint material impressing upon and over time eroding the bone.
